Backyard Worlds: Cool Neighbors

Citizen ScienceOngoing

Project Overview

Backyard Worlds: Cool Neighbors is a NASA-supported citizen science astronomy project where students analyze infrared space images to discover brown dwarfs, nearby stars, and other hidden cosmic objects close to our solar system. Participants help scientists identify faint moving objects that are difficult for computers to detect automatically.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding brown dwarfs and nearby cosmic objects
  • Exposure to infrared astronomy and space imaging
  • Development of observation and pattern-recognition skills
  • Introduction to astronomical image analysis techniques
  • STEM and astronomy career awareness
